France will start stopping small boats in Channel following UK pressure
France has agreed to start stopping small boats in the English Channel, following an extended period of insistence from the United Kingdom.
This policy shift comes after the Prime Minister wrote to the President urging him to support the plan and stating there presently "have no effective preventive measure" in the maritime passage.
French maritime police have been authorized to intercept the migrant vessels at sea, but exclusively prior to they've picked up their migrants, according to official statements.
French authorities have infrequently acted to prevent the overcrowded boats leaving the coastline because it is viewed as excessively high a risk to both personnel and individuals.
"It is crucial that we implement these methods this period... We have zero effective deterrent in the Channel waters."
Now, a French naval police spokesperson states officers will start taking action at sea, with the aim of safeguarding lives.
Significantly, the spokesperson ruled out the use of nets to stop boats, which had earlier been reported as a possible technique to snarl the engines of the vessels.
This determination to take action at all is a significant advancement, following a short-lived shift towards a more aggressive approach this warmer season, which dropped off when the previous government official left government.
That was highlighted in July, preceding a meeting between the UK leader and President, when French police were witnessed walking into the sea to damage the sides of a vessel.
Currently French authorities will once more be allowed to stop boats before they pick up asylum-seeking individuals from the beaches of France's north coast, however it's uncertain how the vessels will be stopped.
Powerful gusts are currently postponing the commencement of interceptions and the people-smuggling gangs will be seeking ways to adapt to avoid detection, as they have done so often in the past.
UK immigration authorities and Downing Street have been contacted for response.
