Unidentified Magenta Ooze on Isolated Tasmanian Shoreline Spurs Concerns of Possible Algae Outbreak
Officials in the island state are working to identify a magenta ooze that has surfaced on a remote shoreline, with a number of researchers concerned it could be an algae outbreak.
Widespread Occurrence Along Shore
The magenta-hued slime appeared along a section of a southern bay about 37 miles south of Hobart. A like substance has also been noted on areas of Little Roaring Beach and Little Taylors Bay.
Samples Gathered for Examination
Examples have been taken and provided to the Environment Protection Authority for examination. A spokesperson commented that "algal blooms are a natural occurrence in response to variations in nutrients, temperature, rain or light".
"They are sometimes called reddish tides because the outbreaks can change the water red," the official said. "Only some algal blooms are harmful, with several kinds serving as a major source of food for creatures in the oceanic food chain."
"The most common cause of crimson tides in local waters is the sea plant Noctiluca scintillans, which can produce luminous nighttime effects at night."
Rising Frequency Associated with Climate Change
Phytoplankton proliferations happen naturally but their frequency has grown in recent times, in part due to environmental shifts and contamination that combine to create nutrient-rich waters ideal for the quick expansion of dinoflagellates.
Dinoflagellates are a phytoplankton species that usually function as the ocean's garbage cleaners. During a bloom, there is a rapid growth in their numbers that interferes with the normal functioning of ecosystems.
These phenomena have been likened to subsurface wildfires and can continue to grow as long as conditions are ripe. In severe cases, sensitive marine ecosystems can be destroyed as sea creatures is killed or smothered, offering more nutrients for the proliferation.
Previous Devastating Event in another region
Another region in the past dealt with a devastating phytoplankton proliferation along its southern coastline after a succession of oceanic warm spells, which expanded across a vast area. The bloom resulted in swimmers with sore eyes and hacking coughs and may have eliminated up to numerous aquatic species across 400 different species, according to government calculations.
Specialist Assessment on the Current Situation
An estuarine ecologist, who was involved in studying the beginning of South Australia's event commented, based on images of the local event, the most likely species involved was Noctiluca scintillans, a kind of dinoflagellate also known as "sea sparkle".
"We have seen lots of these events around Tasmania of late," she added.
Coleman explained this organism did not create poisons similar to the organism involved in that harmful outbreak, but it does ingest small invertebrates and "numerous fish eggs", meaning fish and crustacean species were most at risk.
"It's common to observe a outbreak of this algae after a bloom of something else, or for example a marine breeding," she noted.
Appeals for Response and Safety Concerns
Lilly Henley, who collected samples of the magenta ooze in the state, commented it looked like the possible outbreak had "expanded greatly" and indicated the aquaculture sector was the most likely culprit, referring to like situations in other places.
"So Tasmania needs to send a firm alert here, the authorities and the environmental agency need to respond to this. We need to study the specimens we've collected and we need to notify the community here," she said.
She expressed she had worries for public safety after noticing a tingling sensation along her body while being sprayed with affected seawater.
Claims of Dead Animals and Demands for Leadership Response
An advocacy organization has documented dead octopus and dead sea cucumbers washing ashore, with a longtime environmental campaigner labeling the situation as an "ecological crisis" and demanding the government head to visit and "lead the reaction that government must be doing".
"The leader needs to realize this is a crisis in the unfolding, economically as well as for nature."

Addressing reporters, the official stated he was uninformed of any relationships between the algae outbreak and the aquaculture sector, emphasizing expert examination was needed before conclusions could be reached.
"It is vital to guarantee our waterways are safe for nature and viable," he remarked.
"Our coastal assets across the island are our assets and we need to ensure the public and our business sector can coexist to enjoy our aquatic resources productively and sustainably."
